GPAI for Basketball!

Game Performance Assessment Instrument
(GPAI)
The GPAI is a tool for teachers to use in order to assess players or have players assess each other. In order to do so you must first select a tactical problem that the players are experiencing and then they will give the player 2 marks (each out of 5) for each of the three main points within that tactical problem. This will be performed twice in order to have accuracy as well as seeing if the player was able to improve their game after seeing their first assessment and reading the notes that followed.

In this example of a GPAI, I used the game of basketball which is a territory-type game. The tactical problem being off-the-ball skills (when the player is not handling the ball), which includes; proper stance, how to be defensive and guarding their territory.

Working on Off-the-Ball Skills!

     1.      base - recovery to the ready position- set up
      -ready stance between movements

     2.   cover- defence - player vs. ball
-providing defensive help for a partner making a play or if they are guarding whomever has the ball

3.
guarding
-Defending the space around the basket against an opponent who may or may not have the ball.

     Instructions:

Use this criteria for when the player is using these off-the-ball skills. You would rate the player on a scale of 1-5, as stated below.

1(Weak)                                       2(Somewhat Weak)                       3(Somewhat Effective)                4(Effective)                                       5(Very Effective)

-Write a note for why you gave that rating
-Give feedback on how the game was played, what strategies were used
-Upon completion, have them read their assessment and then do it one more time

Was there improvement in game 2?
